Houtskär is a group of about 700 islands in the middle of the Archipelago Sea, with roughly 520 permanent residents and far more summer visitors. The main island is reached by the free Galtby–Kittuis road ferry, and the main village, Näsby, is walkable end to end. Come for quiet roads, wooden boathouses, a 1703 wooden church and the Archipelago National Park islet of Jungfruskär. One full day covers Näsby; two nights let you add Mossala or a boat trip. Almost everything — museum, restaurant, bike hire, guest marina — runs June to August.

Getting around

Näsby is small enough to walk. For anything else, bike — ask your accommodation about renting one — or bring a car. The main road from Kittuis to Mossala is paved but narrow, crooked and hilly, with two short cable-ferry crossings (Roslax–Kivimo, Björkö–Mossala); other roads are gravel. A small internal bus mostly links Kittuis and Näsby in season, and Skärgårdsbuss coaches serve Mossala about twice a day. Cable ferries run when needed and are free. Remote islands are served by small ship-like ferries that usually do not take cars and often must be requested by phone the day before.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for tourists; the real risks are ticks in long grass, wildlife on the road at dusk, and the fact that the health station in Näsby keeps restricted hours.
  • Ticks are very common in grass and woods; check yourself after walking.
  • Elk and deer on the roads at dusk — drive slowly on the main road.
  • Most restaurants, the museum and bike hire close outside Jun–Aug; the shop keeps shorter winter hours.
  • The health care station in Näsby has restricted hours; serious cases go to Turku.
  • Some ferries to the outer islands must be booked by phone at least the previous day and may not take cars.
  • The grocery shop in Björkö closed in 2016 but still appears on many maps.
