What things cost
Street and cafeteria food is cheap by Gulf standards: a shawarma is AED 8–15 and a karak tea AED 1–3. Sit-down restaurants and hotel bars are where the bill climbs, and a single beer at AED 45–65 can cost more than a day of metro rides.

Fees and taxes on your bill
The dirham is pegged to the US dollar at about 3.67, so prices move with the dollar rather than with the euro or pound. Hotel bills add 5% VAT, 10% service and municipality fees, plus the Dubai tourism dirham of AED 7–20 a room per night. A room advertised at AED 400 is not AED 400 at checkout.
Cards and phone wallets work almost everywhere in Dubai. Keep small notes for abras, tips and souk stalls, and use ATMs inside malls and banks rather than standalone machines.

Ways to spend less
Sleep in Deira or Bur Dubai rather than on the beach, eat at cafeterias and food courts, and use the metro and buses on a Nol card instead of taxis. Free sights — the Creek abras, souks, corniches and mosque exteriors — fill a day at almost no cost.
If you want one big paid experience, pick it deliberately: a desert safari or an observation deck, not both on the same day. Sharjah and Al Ain are cheaper bases than Dubai for accommodation and food.
