Things to do in Ubud with kids: best attractions and family tips

Ubud suits families who plan around two short outings a day rather than a full schedule. The Monkey Forest and the Campuhan Ridge walk are both walkable from the centre, which saves a car seat argument. Waterfalls and the zoo need a driver, 20–40 minutes each way.

Ages matter more than budget here. Under-fives do best with the forest, the ridge and a pool afternoon. Ages six and up can handle waterfall stairs and a half-day zoo or elephant-park visit. Teenagers usually prefer rafting on the Ayung river or a cooking class over temples.

Most family stops sit on two axes from central Ubud. The Monkey Forest and the palace are in the centre, walkable from Jalan Hanoman and Jalan Suweta. The Campuhan Ridge starts near the west end of Jalan Raya Ubud.

North and northeast: Tegallalang terraces and Tibumana waterfall, 20–40 minutes by car. South: Tegenungan waterfall and Bali Zoo, 20–30 minutes. Bali Bird Park is further south near Batubulan, 40–50 minutes. Coordinates below are approximate.

Ubud's traffic is the main family friction. Distances look short on a map but a 5 km drive can take 25 minutes at midday. Group outings by direction: one day north for terraces and Tibumana, one day south for Tegenungan and the zoo. Keep afternoons free for the pool, which is what most children remember.

Health basics: drink bottled or filtered water, use mosquito repellent at dusk, and check whether your accommodation has a pool fence if you have toddlers. Ubud has clinics and pharmacies in the centre; for anything serious, Denpasar hospitals are about 60–90 minutes away depending on traffic.

Money: most entry gates take cash only. ATMs in central Ubud are common but can run out on weekends. Cards work at larger hotels, the zoo and most restaurants.

April to October is the dry season and the easiest window with children: fewer downpours, more reliable waterfall and rafting days. July and August are busiest, so book family rooms and classes early and expect slower traffic.

November to March is wetter, with short heavy showers. Mornings are usually clearer, so front-load outdoor plans. Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence, closes the airport and most businesses for 24 hours; check the date before booking flights, and note that some sites close for temple ceremonies at any time of year.

Ramadan and Indonesian school holidays bring domestic crowds to the zoo and terraces. If you want quiet, travel on weekdays and avoid the 10:00–14:00 tour-bus window at Tegallalang.

Ubud has no airport. Fly into Denpasar (DPS), then take a pre-booked car or taxi, 60–90 minutes depending on traffic. Airport taxis use a fixed-price counter; ride apps are usually cheaper but pickup points at DPS are restricted. A private transfer is the simplest option with children and luggage.

From south Bali (Kuta, Seminyak, Sanur, Canggu), a private car takes 45–90 minutes. From Uluwatu or Nusa Dua, allow 90–120 minutes. Fast boats from the Gili islands and Nusa Penida land at Sanur or Padang Bai, then it is another 60–90 minutes by road.

Once in Ubud, most families hire a driver by the day (roughly IDR 600,000–900,000 for 8–10 hours, 2026 estimate) or use ride apps for short hops. Scooter rental is common but not advisable with children.
