Where to stay in Ubud: best neighborhoods and hotels

If you have two or three nights and want to see Ubud on foot, book central Ubud: the blocks between Jalan Monkey Forest, Jalan Hanoman, Jalan Dewi Sita and Jalan Suweta. The palace, the market, the main dance performances and most of the restaurants sit inside a 15-minute walk. The trade-off is traffic, scooter noise and a smaller garden.

If you have four nights or more, or you are travelling with children, look one ring out: Nyuh Kuning to the south, Penestanan to the west, or Sayan along the Ayung river. You keep the rice fields and the quiet, and a ride into the centre costs a few minutes and a small fare. Tegallalang and Payangan are for travellers with their own scooter or car and a taste for mornings above the valley — not for a first visit without transport.

Central Ubud is a set of one-way lanes rather than a grid. Jalan Monkey Forest is the spine: shops, warungs, bars and the sanctuary at its south end. Jalan Hanoman runs parallel to the east and is slightly calmer, with guesthouses and small hotels. Jalan Suweta heads north toward the palace and the market. Staying here means you can eat breakfast, walk to a dance performance at the palace or Ubud Water Palace, and walk home after dinner. It also means you hear the traffic from about 7am.

Nyuh Kuning is the village immediately south of the Monkey Forest. It is quiet after dark, has a cluster of family-run guesthouses and cafés, and connects to the centre by a paved path past the forest. Families like it because the lanes are calm and the walk is short. Penestanan sits west across the Campuhan ridge; the walk in along the ridge path is one of the better short walks in Ubud, though it is unlit after dark, so most people take a ride back.

Sayan and the Ayung valley, north-west of the centre, hold the larger villas and resorts, many with river frontage and steep garden steps. You need a car or scooter for everything except the hotel restaurant. Tegallalang and Payangan, further north, put you close to the rice terraces and the craft villages, but the drive into Ubud is 20–35 minutes and there is little within walking distance.

Ubud is cheaper than the Bali beach resorts for the same standard of room, and the gap widens the further you go from Jalan Monkey Forest. Dorms start around Rp150,000 per night; a simple fan or air-conditioned double with breakfast runs Rp350,000–700,000. Mid-range hotels and good guesthouses with a pool sit at Rp700,000–1,800,000. Private-pool villas start near Rp1,800,000 and climb steeply in July–August and the last week of December.

Two extra costs matter. First, breakfast is often included in guesthouses but not in villas. Second, transport: if you stay outside the centre, budget for scooters (roughly Rp70,000–100,000 per day, 2026 estimate) or ride-hailing trips of Rp20,000–50,000 each way. Over a week that can add up to more than the room saving, so compare the total, not the nightly rate.

Book early for July–August and the Christmas–New Year week; those are the peak months on Bali and the good mid-range places sell out weeks ahead. April–June and September–October give similar weather with more choice and lower rates.

Check what the room actually faces. In central Ubud, a room on the lane side can be noisy until late; ask for a room at the back or upstairs. In the valley areas, ask how many steps there are to the room — some villas are built down a steep slope, which matters with luggage or small children.

Confirm the transfer before you arrive. Ubud has no airport; you land at Ngurah Rai (DPS) and drive 1.5–2.5 hours depending on traffic. Arrange a hotel pickup or a pre-booked transfer rather than negotiating at the airport, and expect the afternoon run to be the slowest.

For day-to-day movement, ride-hailing apps work in Ubud but some central lanes restrict pickup points, so you may walk a block to meet the driver. Many hotels run a free shuttle into the centre a few times a day — ask before you book if you are staying in Sayan or Tegallalang.
