Ubud

Ubud for solo travellers: safety and tips

Yes — Ubud suits solo travellers: walkable centre, cheap guesthouses and warungs, and easy day tours to join. Stay 3–4 nights in the central triangle (Jalan Hanoman–Monkey Forest–Raya) if you want to walk everywhere; book a scooter or driver only if you plan to sleep outside town. Skip it if you want nightlife or a beach.

Top picks

Ubud rewards a slow first day. Base yourself in the centre, walk the Campuhan ridge and the rice-field paths, then add one paid activity per day so you are never stuck waiting on a group.

For meeting people, guesthouses and small hostels beat resorts: shared breakfast tables do more for a solo trip than any app. Cooking classes, sunrise walks and day tours are the standard ways to spend a morning with others without committing to a whole itinerary.

Map

Ubud has no single grid. The centre is a triangle formed by Jalan Raya Ubud, Jalan Monkey Forest and Jalan Hanoman, with the palace and market at the top. Most guesthouses, warungs and yoga studios sit inside or just off it, which is why a central bed removes the need for daily transport.

Coordinates below are approximate for orientation only.

  • Ubud centre (palace, market): at [-8.50685, 115.26250] — approximate
  • Monkey Forest Road south end: at [-8.51870, 115.26000] — approximate
  • Campuhan ridge walk start: at [-8.50380, 115.25700] — approximate
  • Rice-field walk toward Nyuh Kuning: at [-8.52300, 115.26400] — approximate

Tips

Walk during daylight and carry a light rain shell; pavements are uneven and often broken, and the tropical downpours arrive fast. After dark, the centre is busy enough to feel comfortable, but unlit lanes between rice fields are not where you want to be alone — take a car or walk the main roads.

Solo women generally report Ubud as relaxed, but the usual rules apply: book accommodation with a 24-hour reception or a host who answers messages, share your location with someone at home, and keep the local emergency numbers saved. Drink spiking is rare but not unheard of in Bali's bar areas; Ubud's nightlife is quiet, so most solo travellers go to bed early and get up for sunrise.

Money: carry cash for warungs, markets and scooter rental, and use bank-affiliated ATMs rather than standalone machines. Card is fine in cafés and hotels. Tipping is not expected; rounding up or leaving Rp 10,000–20,000 is normal for drivers and guides.

Health: drink sealed or filtered water, use repellent at dawn and dusk, and check your travel insurance covers scooter riding before you rent one — many policies exclude it, and Indonesian law requires a valid licence.

  • Save 112 (general), 110 (police), 118/119 (ambulance)
  • Keep Rp 200,000–300,000 cash for a late taxi or emergency
  • Agree the scooter price and damage terms before riding off
  • Screenshot your guesthouse address in Indonesian for drivers
  • Book tours through your guesthouse or a licensed operator, not a street tout

Getting there

Most solo travellers land at Denpasar (DPS) and take a pre-booked car or a ride-hailing app to Ubud; the drive is 1.5–2 hours depending on traffic, and the fare is a 2026 estimate of Rp 350,000–500,000. Airport taxis and private transfers are the simplest option after a long flight.

From other Bali bases — Kuta, Seminyak, Sanur, Canggu — a car or shuttle takes 45–90 minutes. There is no train to Ubud. Once in town, you can walk the centre, use ride-hailing apps for short hops, or rent a scooter if you are licensed and insured.

Flight timing from your home country: arrivals from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland mostly land in the evening or after midnight, so book your first night in Ubud in advance rather than arriving and looking for a room.

Questions people ask

Is Ubud good for solo travellers?

Yes. The centre is walkable, guesthouses and warungs are cheap, and day tours are easy to join alone. Three to four nights covers the main sights. It is a poor fit if you want beach time or late nightlife — base in Canggu or Kuta for that.

Is Ubud safe for solo women?

Ubud is generally calm and the centre is busy into the evening. Stick to lit main roads after dark, avoid unlit rice-field lanes alone, book a place with a reachable host, and keep 112 and 110 saved. Standard precautions, not special ones.

Where should a solo traveller stay in Ubud?

Inside the central triangle of Jalan Raya Ubud, Jalan Monkey Forest and Jalan Hanoman, so you can walk to food, yoga and the market. Guesthouses and small hostels are best for meeting people. Expect Rp 250,000–600,000 for a double, 2026 estimate.
