Cool and sometimes wet in Tunis; good desert days, cold nights. Quiet and cheap.

  Mediterranean: mild wet winters, hot dry summers; the sea is warm Jul–Oct.

• Sahel coast · Sousse, Monastir, Mahdia, El Jemcool

  Drier than Tunis; beach season June–September, crowded in July–August.

• Djerba and the south-east · Djerba, Zarzis, Gabèsfine

  Mild winters make Djerba a year-round island; summer heat is humid.

• Saharan south · Tozeur, Douz, Tataouine, Matmatacool

  Warm winter days, freezing nights; summer over 40 °C. The Douz festival is in late December (check).

• Tell and north-west hills · Dougga, Le Kef, Aïn Drahamcool

  Cooler, greener and snow-prone in winter at Aïn Draham.
