Base in Tozeur for 2 nights and Douz for 1–2; treat Tataouine and Ksar Ghilane as separate stops, not day trips.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • North Africa ↗Plan links between North African countries by air or by ferry via Europe; the only regularly usable land borders for visitors are Tunisia–Algeria and Morocco–Mauritania via Western Sahara.
  • North Africa ↗Book Saharan nights (dunes, desert camps, oasis tours) between October and April; from May to September desert day temperatures regularly exceed 40 °C and many tours stop.
  • Tunisia ↗Check entry rules for your passport with official Tunisian government sources or your nearest consulate; visa exemptions depend on nationality.
  • Tunisia ↗The Tunisian dinar is a closed currency: it cannot legally be taken in or out; exchange on arrival and keep receipts to change leftovers back.
  • Tunisia ↗Do not bring a drone without prior authorisation; they are confiscated at customs.

Saharan Tunisia is the desert half of the country: oasis towns, salt flats, dune belts and Berber granaries, spread over hundreds of kilometres of mostly single-road country. Distances are the whole problem — Tozeur to Douz is a short hop, but Douz to Tataouine is a half-day drive. Pick two bases, sleep in them, and let the desert come to you rather than chasing it from Tunis.

Tozeur 2 + Douz 2 + Tataouine 1 (ksour on the last day)
7 nights
Tozeur 2 + Douz 2 + Ksar Ghilane 1 + Tataouine 2, self-drive or a private driver
  • Tozeur–Douz–Tataouine in one day is a driving day, not a sightseeing day.
  • Summer desert heat is dangerous: 40 °C (104 °F)+ from June to August, and some desert camps and mountain-oasis routes close or run reduced.
  • Off-piste driving alone is a bad idea; hire a local driver or join a 4x4 group.
  • Some southern areas have at times carried travel advisories — check your government's current advice before booking.

Bags between cities

There is no useful luggage-forwarding network in the south. Travel with what you can carry; leave big cases at your Tunis or Djerba hotel if you are looping back.

Desert climate: very dry, big day–night swing. March–April and October–November are the comfortable windows; June–August is 40 °C (104 °F)+ by afternoon.
Tataouine and the far southeast
Slightly higher and windier than the Chott, but still a summer furnace; spring brings the best light for the granaries.

The desert is a winter and shoulder-season destination. If you only have summer, keep to early mornings and evenings and plan nothing between 12:00 and 16:00.

Regional passes

Verdict first

Louage (shared minibus)

buy

Cheapest way between southern towns; they leave when full, so mornings are best.

Private driver or 4x4 with guide

buy

The practical option for Ksar Ghilane, Jebil and the ksour; agree the day rate and route in writing before you set off.

Lézard Rouge tourist train

check

Seasonal and weather-dependent; confirm running days before travelling to Metlaoui for it.

Self-drive rental car

check

Fine on the main Tozeur–Douz–Kebili roads; not for piste. Check the rental agreement covers the south.
