Tsuru都留市

Skip Tsuru unless you want to see the Maglev test track at 500 km/h (311 mph); otherwise it's a quiet commuter town with little else for a traveller.

Tsuru is a small city in the foothills of Mount Fuji, known mainly for the Yamanashi Prefectural Maglev Exhibition Center where the Linear Chuo Shinkansen test train passes at 504 km/h. Beyond that, the city has limited attractions for tourists and is best visited as a short stop between Otsuki and Fujiyoshida.

Rules in force · 5
  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • Japan ↗IC cards (ICOCA/Suica) are topped up with cash at station machines.
  • Japan ↗Smoking while walking is banned in most city centres; use designated areas.
  • Japan ↗Shinkansen bags 160–250 cm (L+W+H) need a seat reserved with the oversized-baggage area.

  • Maglev test runs are not on a fixed schedule; check the center's website for viewing times.
  • The tourist association site was closed for renewal as of May 2024; check the city government's Japanese-only page for updates.
  • Limited dining options in the evening; eat before 20:00 or bring snacks.
