The short answer
Foliage is a moving band, not a date. It starts high and north in late September, sweeps through the Northeast, Midwest and Mid-Atlantic in early to mid-October, and finishes in the South, Texas and the Pacific Northwest from late October into mid-November.
If you can only pick one window and one place: the last week of September to the first week of October in northern New England or the Rockies, or the second and third weeks of October in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest. Those two windows cover most of the classic drives and are the easiest to plan around a flight.
Peak colour lasts roughly one to two weeks in any single spot, and a windstorm or heavy rain can strip a hillside in a day. Build in a fallback: a lower-elevation valley or a coastal route usually runs a week or two behind the ridge above it.
| Region | Typical peak | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Northern New England (Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine) | Late Sep – mid Oct | Earliest in the north and at elevation (check) |
| Rockies (Colorado, Wyoming, Montana) | Late Sep – early Oct | Aspen turn gold; high passes can close with early snow (check) |
| Mid-Atlantic (New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia) | Early – late Oct | Long season; the Blue Ridge runs later than the coast (check) |
| Midwest (Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio) | Late Sep – mid Oct | Lake-effect colour along the Great Lakes (check) |
| Southern Appalachians (Tennessee, North Carolina) | Mid Oct – early Nov | Later at lower elevation (check) |
| Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon) | Late Oct – mid Nov | Maples and larches; wetter, so colour can be brief (check) |
| California (Sierra, Napa) | Mid Oct – early Nov | Aspen in the eastern Sierra; vineyards later (check) |
Dates move about a week either way with elevation, drought and the first hard frost (check).
Do
- Check a state foliage report in the week before you leave; most New England and Midwest states publish weekly maps.
- Aim for a weekday. Weekend traffic on the popular scenic byways can double the drive time.
Who this applies to
This page is for travellers planning a US trip around fall colour, whether that is a long weekend drive from a city or a two-week loop that combines two regions. It assumes you are flying into a hub and renting a car, which is how most foliage trips work outside the Northeast rail corridor.
It applies to US citizens and to international visitors on the same timing logic. Entry rules, visa or ESTA requirements and health advice are separate questions, covered on the country and topic pages linked below. If you are travelling on a passport other than a US one, check your own government's travel advice before booking.
It does not apply to travellers who want guaranteed dates. Foliage is weather-dependent, and no operator can promise a peak. If a fixed date matters more than colour, pick a region with a long season, such as the Blue Ridge or the Midwest, rather than a single mountain.
| Traveller | What changes |
|---|---|
| US resident, driving | Timing is the only real constraint; book lodging early |
| International visitor | Add visa/ESTA, flights and insurance lead time |
| No car | Northeast rail and city parks are the practical option |
| Family with school dates | Mid-October is the safest bet in most regions |

How to plan it, step by step
1. Pick a region, not a list of states. Foliage trips reward depth: three or four nights in one area beats six one-night stops. The regions with the most reliable colour and the easiest logistics are northern New England, the Blue Ridge in the Mid-Atlantic, the Great Lakes Midwest and the Rockies.
2. Set the window from the table above, then shift it a week earlier for high elevation and a week later for a valley or coastal route. If you are flying, book flights first and lodging immediately after; foliage-weekend rooms in Vermont, New Hampshire and the Shenandoah area are the first thing to sell out.
3. Choose a base and a loop. A base with two or three day drives is easier than a moving hotel every night, and it gives you a fallback if one road is socked in. Keep daily driving to about two to three hours so you have time out of the car.
4. Book the fixed pieces: rental car, any scenic railway or gondola, and timed entries at parks that require them. National park entry rules and reservation systems change year to year, so confirm on the official park site before you travel.
5. Leave slack. Weather is the whole variable. A rain day is a good day for a museum town, a covered bridge drive or a cider mill, and the colour often improves after a cold front clears.
Do
- Fly into a secondary airport if it saves a long drive; smaller regional airports often have cheaper cars in October.
- Rent the car before you book the hotel if you are travelling in the last week of September or the first two weeks of October.
Watch out
- Mountain passes in the Rockies can close temporarily with early snow; carry chains if required and check road conditions daily.
What it costs and how long it takes
A foliage trip is a normal US road trip with a seasonal lodging premium. In 2026, expect mid-range rooms in a foliage hotspot to run roughly US$180–350 a night on peak weekends, and the same room to drop sharply after the leaves fall. Budget motels and chain hotels outside the hotspot towns are the cheapest way to keep costs down.
Car rental for a week is typically US$350–700 depending on airport and size, with one-way drop fees if you finish in a different city. Fuel for a 1,000–1,500 km loop is a modest part of the total at US prices. Scenic railways, gondolas and estate tastings are the main add-ons and are usually US$25–80 per person each.
Time: three to four nights is enough for one compact region by car. Seven nights covers a bigger loop such as Vermont plus the White Mountains, or the Blue Ridge from Shenandoah south. Ten to fourteen nights lets you combine two regions, but only if you fly between them rather than driving the whole way.
| Item | 2026 estimate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-range room, peak weekend | US$180–350 / night | Check; drops outside peak weekends |
| Mid-range room, off-peak | US$90–180 / night | Check |
| Car rental, 7 days | US$350–700 | Check; one-way fees extra |
| Fuel, 1,200 km | US$90–140 | Check; depends on vehicle |
| Scenic railway or gondola | US$25–80 / person | Check; book ahead |
| National park entry | US$20–35 / vehicle | Check; annual pass may pay off |

Exceptions and things that go wrong
Drought and heat push peak later and duller; a wet, cool September can bring it forward. A single windy storm can end a region's season in 24 hours, which is why a fallback plan matters more here than on most trips.
Columbus Day weekend and the weekends either side are the busiest of the year in New England and the Blue Ridge. Traffic on the main scenic byways can be slow, and some small towns restrict parking. If you can travel Tuesday to Thursday, do.
Wildfire smoke in the West and in parts of the Rockies can flatten the view even when the colour is good. Check air quality and fire restrictions before a western trip. In the Pacific Northwest, rain is normal in late October and November, so pack for wet weather rather than expecting dry, crisp days.
Some mountain roads and park facilities close for the season in October, and a few scenic railways end their season early. Confirm opening dates on official sites rather than assuming a summer schedule.
Watch out
- Peak weekends sell out; a same-week booking in a hotspot town may leave you 45–60 minutes away.
- Early snow can close high passes in the Rockies without much warning.

Questions people ask
Autumn foliage: what is the short answer?
Go late September to mid November, moving south and downhill as the season runs. Northern New England and the Rockies peak around the last week of September to early October; the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest in early to mid October; the South, Texas and the Pacific Northwest from late October into mid-November. Peak shifts about a week either way with elevation and weather.
Who does it apply to?
Anyone planning a US trip around fall colour, whether a long weekend drive or a two-week loop. It assumes you fly into a hub and rent a car. International visitors should also check visa or ESTA rules and their own government's travel advice; those are separate questions from timing.
How much does it cost and how long does it take?
In 2026, expect roughly US$180–350 a night for a mid-range room on a peak foliage weekend, US$350–700 for a week's car rental, and US$25–80 per person for a scenic railway or gondola. Three to four nights covers one compact region; seven nights a larger loop; ten to fourteen nights two regions if you fly between them. All figures are estimates — confirm before booking.
When exactly is peak colour?
There is no fixed date. Peak lasts about one to two weeks in any single spot and moves with elevation: ridges and northern areas turn first, valleys and coasts a week or two later. Cool nights near or below 5 °C after warm, sunny days push colour along.
Where should I go if my dates are fixed?
Pick a region with a long season rather than a single mountain. The Blue Ridge and the Mid-Atlantic generally run from early to late October, and the Midwest from late September to mid-October, so a fixed mid-October date has a good chance in either. New England is riskier if you can only travel in early November.
Do I need to book ahead?
Yes for lodging in foliage hotspots, ideally two to four months out for peak weekends. Rental cars and any scenic railway or gondola tickets are the next priority. National park entry rules and reservation systems change year to year, so confirm on the official park site.
