Getting around in Oranjestad
Oranjestad is steep and uneven. The Lower Town shore road is flat but sandy; the Upper Town lanes, the ruins and The Quill are not step-free. Plan on a car and check each site.
- Pavements:
- Patchy, narrow and steep in the Upper Town.
- Guesthouses:
- Few have lifts; ask for a ground-floor room.
- Getting around:
- A hired car or taxi is the step-free option; there is no public transport.
- Toilets:
- Accessible toilets are rare; ask guesthouses and larger restaurants.
Medicines and health on the ground
The Sint Eustatius guide lists no medicine paperwork. Check the official customs page for your medicines.
- Sun and heat:
- Strong all year: hats, sun cream and water. Start hikes early.
- Mosquitoes:
- Dengue and other mosquito-borne infections occur in the region: use repellent and cover up at dusk (check current advice).
- Diving:
- Dive with a licensed operator; do not fly within 24 hours after diving; there is no chamber on the island.
- Water:
- Tap water is desalinated; many visitors drink bottled or filtered water.
- Medical care:
- Basic. Serious cases are flown out; carry insurance with evacuation cover.

Ask your insurer
Age limits and prices differ by policy and the guides do not hold them, so put these to the insurer before you buy.
- What is the oldest age the policy covers, at purchase and on the last day of the trip?
- Does the price or the cover change after a certain age?
- Are existing conditions covered, and what must be declared?
- Does the cover include medical evacuation and trip interruption?
Not medical advice. This page does not know anyone’s health. Ask a doctor before the trip, and carry a list of medicines and conditions.
