Tiruchirappalli — Trichy — sits in the middle of Tamil Nadu and is one of the state's main rail junctions, with trains to Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. The Rockfort temple on its rock and the Srirangam temple complex, about 7 km north of the centre, are the two reasons to stop. The city is hot, low-humidity and cheap; two nights covers it, three if you add day trips.

TNSTC city buses are the main transport and cost a few rupees; bus #1 links the junction, Central Bus Stand and Rockfort. Autos and taxis are everywhere — agree the fare or use a meter app before you get in. Trains from Tiruchirappalli Junction reach Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.

Safety

Trichy is a low-crime city and the main risks are practical: heat, traffic, monkeys on the Rockfort steps and auto fares. Women travellers report occasional staring; standard city precautions apply.
  • April to June is 38 °C and above; do the Rockfort climb before 9am or after 5pm.
  • The Rockfort steps are steep and uneven, with monkeys on the upper section — keep food and bags closed.
  • Temple dress codes: shoulders and knees covered; shoes off before the inner areas.
  • Auto drivers at the junction and bus stand quote high first fares — walk 100 m and ask again.
  • October and November bring heavy northeast-monsoon rain and occasional cyclones.
