Thasos is a green, mountainous North Aegean island 45 min by ferry from Keramoti, with sandy beaches, the Aliki marble quarry, ancient ruins at Limenas and stone mountain villages. It has no airport, so you arrive via Kavala or Thessaloniki. A car or motorbike is needed for the mountain villages and the quieter west coast; the south and east coasts are the busy, younger end.

Getting around

One ring road circles the island; side roads climb to the mountain villages, some ending in dirt tracks where normal rental cars are not allowed. Buses run in summer only. Taxis cost about €1.5/km and must be booked in advance after midnight. Hire a car or motorbike for the whole stay, or a 4WD for the days you want the waterfalls and Ipsario.

Roughly 5 h of travel leaves only a few hours in town; go for the old town and a meal, or sleep a night to see more. Ferry timetable varies by season.

Only useful as a transport link to Kavala airport; there is little to see.

Theologos and Kastro waterfalls

Watch out

Safety

Thasos is a low-crime island; the real risks are summer heat, dirt-road driving, the Giola rock jumps and July–August water and power cuts. Use 112 for anything urgent.
  • July–August brings overtourism: multi-day drinking-water cuts, power cuts and overloaded internet.
  • Friday afternoon and Saturday morning ferry queues at Keramoti; Sunday afternoon queues at Limenas. Do not take the last ferry.
  • Giola: the descent is on dirt road then a steep walk; jumping from the rocks causes serious head injuries every year.
  • Some mainland rental cars may not be taken onto the island; confirm with the company before booking.
  • Dirt roads to Maries waterfall, Ipsario and Kastro waterfall are 4WD-only; normal rentals are not permitted.
