Thasos
Θάσος
Give Thasos 4 nights with a car: base at Limenas or Limenaria, drive the ring road; skip July–August if crowds and possible water or power cuts bother you.
Thasos is a green, mountainous North Aegean island 45 min by ferry from Keramoti, with sandy beaches, the Aliki marble quarry, ancient ruins at Limenas and stone mountain villages. It has no airport, so you arrive via Kavala or Thessaloniki. A car or motorbike is needed for the mountain villages and the quieter west coast; the south and east coasts are the busy, younger end.

Taxis cost about €1.5/km and must be booked in advance after midnight. Hire a car or motorbike for the whole stay, or a 4WD for the days you want the waterfalls and Ipsario.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say 'kaliméra' (morning) or 'kalispéra' (evening) on entering shops and tavernas; avoid: Launching straight into a question
- Hospitality: Accept offered coffee, sweets or raki; it is part of the welcome; avoid: Refusing flatly — take a little
- Churches: Covered shoulders and knees; quiet voices; a small candle donation; avoid: Turning your back on the altar for photos during a service
- Gestures: Wave with the palm turned towards yourself; avoid: The open palm pushed forward (moutza)
- Conversation: Family, food and football are easy topics; avoid: Lecturing on the debt crisis, Türkiye or the name of North Macedonia
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries or wine; arrive a little late; avoid: Leaving food on the plate if you have been served more
- Dress: Casual; long trousers or skirt for monasteries; avoid: Swimwear in town, shops and churches
Scams and watch-outs
- July–August brings overtourism: multi-day drinking-water cuts, power cuts and overloaded internet.
- Friday afternoon and Saturday morning ferry queues at Keramoti; Sunday afternoon queues at Limenas. Do not take the last ferry.
- Giola: the descent is on dirt road then a steep walk; jumping from the rocks causes serious head injuries every year.
- Some mainland rental cars may not be taken onto the island; confirm with the company before booking.
- Dirt roads to Maries waterfall, Ipsario and Kastro waterfall are 4WD-only; normal rentals are not permitted.
Thasos is a low-crime island; the real risks are summer heat, dirt-road driving, the Giola rock jumps and July–August water and power cuts. Use 112 for anything urgent.
