Southern Finland is the coastal south plus the lake district behind it: Helsinki and its archipelago coast, the wooden town of Porvoo, castle towns like Hämeenlinna and Turku, and the Saimaa lakeland in the east. Trains and coaches link the main towns, so you can sleep in one city and reach most of the region as day-trips. Helsinki is the only base that works without a car for a short trip; Turku and the Lakeland reward a second stop.
