Northern Finland is roughly half of Finland's land area with a population barely bigger than Helsinki's. There is no single hub: Oulu is the rail and road junction, Rovaniemi is the Arctic Circle gateway with the most flights, and the ski and wilderness villages (Levi, Ylläs, Saariselkä, Kuusamo) are 1.5–4 hours further on. Pick one base per trip and accept long transfers between them; buses to villages often run once or twice a day, so a car or a booked transfer decides your itinerary.

Helsinki to Rovaniemi by bus is a 10+ hour overnight ride; the train or a flight is usually worth the difference.
Reindeer on the road are common and elk collisions are rare but often fatal — slow down at dusk and dawn.
Cell coverage in Lapland is patchy away from main roads; carry a printed map and compass on any longer hike.
There are no international passenger trains in this region, including none between Finland and Sweden.
