Finland's west coast is a broad coastal route, not one defined region: it runs flat and open along the Gulf of Bothnia from the Turku archipelago up through Ostrobothnia to Kokkola. It holds some of the country's oldest towns, about half its Swedish-speaking population, and UNESCO-listed sites including Old Rauma, the Sammallahdenmäki Bronze Age burial site and the Kvarken Archipelago. Trains and coaches link the main towns on the E8; the small wooden towns and archipelago need a car or a boat. Two to four nights covers a first pass.
