Southeast New Mexico is a driving region: two national parks (Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands), a mountain escape (Ruidoso, Cloudcroft) and Roswell's UFO kitsch, spread across 300+ km of desert plain. Pick one base per cluster — Carlsbad for the caverns, Alamogordo for White Sands — and accept 1.5–3 hour drives between them. Water, fuel and a full tank matter more here than in most of the state.

- This is the hottest part of New Mexico. Carry more water than you think you need and watch for heat illness on any hike.
