Southeast Arizona is a desert basin-and-range region where the interstate hides everything. Leave I-10 and you get Apache Wars history, two of the best birding sites in the US, and mountain ranges that run 10 °C cooler than the valley floor. A car is not optional: there is no public transport between towns. Sleep in Sierra Vista for services and Huachuca access, or Bisbee for a walkable historic district, and treat Tombstone, Willcox, Douglas and Chiricahua as day drives.

Arizona does not observe daylight saving, so summer afternoons stay light late. Spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) are the comfortable windows; late February–April is peak for wintering sandhill cranes at Whitewater Draw.
