The South Sound is Pierce and Thurston counties at the south end of Puget Sound: Tacoma's museums and port, Olympia's capitol, and Mount Rainier's northwest approach. The two cities are about 50 minutes apart on I-5, so pick one base and drive out. Traffic on I-5 is the real cost of this region — plan around rush hour.
