Southwest Washington is the north bank of the Columbia: a gorge, a volcano, and a wide Pacific beach, all within about three hours of each other on I-5 and US-101. Portland's airport sits across the river, so this region is easier to reach than its small towns suggest. Sleep in Vancouver for the gorge and Mount St Helens, in Longview or Kelso for the coast road, and in Long Beach or Ilwaco for the beach itself. A car is close to essential outside Vancouver.
