Puget Sound is a fjord, not a lake: water splits the region into a mainland side (Seattle, Tacoma, Everett) and a peninsula side (Kitsap, Olympic Peninsula). Ferries are the shortcut and the sightseeing; driving around can mean a 350 km detour for a 9 km crossing. Pick one base for 3–4 nights and day-trip by ferry.
