The San Juan Islands are a cluster of forested islands in the Salish Sea between Washington's mainland and Canada's Vancouver Island. Ferries, kayaks and orcas move through the same water; bald eagles and float planes cross above. The islands are rural, with a few small towns on the largest ones. A small year-round population swells with summer visitors who come for the scenery and outdoor life. Sleep on one island and day-trip the others by ferry, bike or shuttle — changing hotels every night costs more than the crossings.

- San Juan Islands
- Best visited in summer, when days run long with little rain and sea air keeps it cooler than the mainland; winter is milder than the mainland but wind can howl on exposed shores.
Summer is also the crowd peak: ferry lines and lodgings fill, so reserve both. Off-season is quieter and often cheaper, but many businesses close seasonally.
