Where to stay in Sofia: best neighborhoods and hotels

Sofia's sights sit in a compact core: the Alexander Nevsky cathedral, the Roman ruins, the National Palace of Culture (NDK) and the pedestrian stretch of Vitosha Boulevard are all within roughly a 20–30 minute walk of each other. Staying inside that ring means you spend your days walking, not riding.

If you want a quieter base with the same access, look at Lozenets and the streets just south of NDK, where tram and metro lines still put the centre a few stops away. The airport area makes sense only for one night before an early departure.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for a double room in the shoulder season, in euro. Weekend rates in ski season and around public holidays run higher; book early for those dates.

This is the default for a first visit. From a hotel near Vitosha Boulevard you can walk to the cathedral, the archaeological ruins, the mosque and the markets without planning a single ride. The metro stations along the boulevard and at NDK connect you to the airport and the main rail station when you need them.

Expect traffic noise on the boulevard itself and in the blocks around NDK. Rooms facing inner courtyards are noticeably quieter for the same price. This area also has the widest choice of cafés and restaurants, which matters if you are only in Sofia for two or three nights.

Lozenets, south of the centre, is residential and calm, with tram and metro links into the core. It suits travellers staying four nights or more, or anyone who wants to sleep with the window open. The same applies to Oborishte and the streets around the parks on the east side, where embassies and older apartment buildings keep things quiet.

The trade-off is evening logistics: you will usually ride or walk 20 minutes for dinner, then back. If you are comfortable with that, you get more space and lower prices for the same standard of room.

The central railway and bus station district is practical only if you leave early the next morning. It is not a sightseeing base, and the streets around it are busier and less pleasant at night. Treat it as a bed for one night, not a holiday address.

Sofia Airport (SOF) is about 10 km east of the centre. Airport-area hotels work for a very early flight or a long layover. Book early for January–March ski weekends, when Sofia fills with people heading to the mountains, and around major public holidays. Outside those dates, central Sofia has enough supply that you can book a few days ahead.
