How to choose your dates, step by step
Start with what you want to do, not with the calendar. Beach and high-mountain hiking point to mid-June to mid-September. City sightseeing, monasteries and wine country are better in May, June, September or October, when the Thracian plain is warm rather than hot and Sofia is not yet cold. Skiing runs December to March, with February the busiest and most expensive stretch.
Then check the fixed dates. Orthodox Easter moves each year and brings a four-day holiday; 1 May and 6 May also push Bulgarians to the mountains and the coast, so buses and coastal rooms fill. If your trip overlaps one of these, book transport and the first two nights in advance.
Finally, split the country by region. Sofia sits at about 550 m and is cooler than the plains. Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Veliko Tarnovo and Ruse see 35 °C-plus summer days and cold, foggy winters. The Black Sea coast is swimmable from mid-June to mid-September, with the sea around 24–26 °C in August, and grey and windy in winter. The mountains hold snow from December to March, and the high trails clear from late June to September.
If your dates are flexible, price the shoulder weeks first: late May, early June, mid-September and early October usually give the best weather-to-cost ratio. November and January to March are the cheapest months overall, but short daylight and closed coastal resorts limit what you can do.
