Layover in Seoul: what to do

Leaving Incheon International (ICN) is a normal arrival, not a special transit procedure. You pass immigration, collect your bag if it is not checked through, and walk out into the arrivals hall. There is no transit lane that lets you skip this, so the question is simply whether you have enough time and the right entry permission.

The practical threshold is 6 hours for ICN and 4 hours for Gimpo (GMP). Below that, immigration queues, the 43–60 minute train each way and the 2-hour check-in buffer eat the whole window. Between 6 and 9 hours you can reach one Seoul district and eat; from 10 hours up you can string two stops together.

Two things change the maths. If your onward flight is on a separate ticket, you must collect and re-check your bags, which adds 45–60 minutes at each end. If you arrive late at night, the subway stops around midnight and the last AREX trains run before that, so a 23:00 landing with a 09:00 departure is better spent in a transit hotel.

South Korea does not offer a general visa-free transit stay for most nationalities. To leave the airport you need either visa-free entry, a K-ETA where your passport qualifies, or a visa issued in advance. Check your own passport against the official immigration list before you plan anything in the city.

The table below is a starting point only. Rules change, and airlines check documents at the departure gate, not at Incheon.

If your bag is checked through to the final destination, you only carry a day bag and can move fast. If it is not, you have three options at ICN: paid lockers in both terminals, staffed storage counters, and the airline bag-drop if you can check in early for the onward flight.

Lockers at ICN charge by size and by the day, roughly ₩3,000–6,000 for a small locker and more for large ones (2026 estimate, check). Staffed storage costs a little more but takes odd-sized items. Both are in the public arrivals area, so you must clear immigration first.

Seoul Station also has lockers and a staffed storage desk, which is useful if you plan to end your city loop there before taking the AREX back. Do not leave bags unattended in the terminal; unattended items are treated as security incidents.

The AREX airport railroad is the default. The express train runs non-stop to Seoul Station in about 43 minutes; the all-stop train takes roughly 60 minutes and costs less. Both leave from the same platforms at ICN Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and both connect to the Seoul subway at Seoul Station.

Airport limousine buses run to Myeongdong, Gangnam and other hotel districts. They take 60–90 minutes depending on traffic and drop you closer to hotels than the train does, which matters if you are carrying bags. Taxis are the fastest door-to-door option outside rush hour but the most expensive; a metered ride to central Seoul is a large fare and black deluxe taxis cost about double.

From Gimpo (GMP), the AREX to Seoul Station takes about 30 minutes, and Gimpo is on the Seoul subway Line 5 and Line 9, so a 4-hour layover there is workable.

Six hours is one district, one meal and back. Take the AREX to Seoul Station, walk the short hop to Myeongdong for street food and a look at the shops, then return. Do not attempt a palace on 6 hours; the walk from the gate to the halls alone costs 30 minutes.

Twelve hours buys a real half-day. Pick either the palace belt (Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insadong) or the river-and-shopping side (Gangnam, COEX, Han River park). Gyeongbokgung closes on Tuesdays and most other palaces close Mondays, so check the day before you commit.

Twenty-four hours is an overnight. Sleep near Seoul Station or Myeongdong, eat Korean barbecue or a market breakfast at Gwangjang, and use the morning for one more district. Keep the last 3 hours clear for the airport run.
