San Francisco in May: what to expect

May is the transition month on the California coast: the winter rain has ended, the ocean is still cold, and the fog that defines San Francisco summers has not settled in yet. Expect mild days around 18 °C (65 °F) and nights near 11 °C (52 °F), with roughly 9–10 hours of sun a day and only a handful of wet days. The catch is microclimate, not temperature. The western side of the city — Ocean Beach, the Sunset, the Presidio — can sit under low cloud and wind while the Mission and SoMa are sunny and 5 °C warmer. Fog is possible but less frequent than in June, July and August, which is exactly why May is a good window for viewpoints.

Wind is the thing visitors underestimate. The Golden Gate Bridge deck, the ferry to Sausalito and the ocean beaches can feel 5–8 °C colder than downtown, and the afternoon sea breeze picks up from about 2pm. A windproof layer does more for you here than a thick coat.

May is medium season in San Francisco. Weekdays are comfortable at the big sights; weekends and the last week of the month — Memorial Day, the last Monday — get noticeably busier as the US summer travel season opens. The parent country table lists May as medium crowds and medium prices nationally, and the city follows that pattern.

Hotel rates are the clearest signal. Early May is usually the cheapest window before summer pricing kicks in; from Memorial Day weekend onward, rates climb and stay high through September. Book two to four weeks ahead for the best combination of choice and price, and expect the biggest jump around the holiday weekend itself.

For the practical sights, timing beats booking. Alcatraz ferries sell out days ahead in May and further ahead around the holiday — reserve early. Cable cars, the Powell–Hyde line and the ferry to Sausalito are busiest 10am–3pm; go before 9am or after 4pm. Museums such as SFMOMA and the de Young are quietest on weekday mornings.

May is a busy month on the city calendar, with a mix of long-running and date-variable events. Confirm exact dates and any ticketing rules on the organiser's site before you plan around them.

Bay to Breakers, a 12 km costumed run across the city from the Embarcadero to Ocean Beach, is the signature May event and takes over the route on its Sunday. Carnaval San Francisco, a Mission District street celebration, usually falls on the Memorial Day weekend. The San Francisco International Arts Festival and various neighbourhood street fairs also cluster in May.

Memorial Day itself (last Monday) is a national holiday: expect fuller hotels, busier highways and heavier traffic at the airport from Friday to Monday. If you want the quiet version of May, aim for the first three weeks.

May rewards the outdoor version of San Francisco. Walk the Golden Gate Bridge early, before the afternoon wind, then take the coastal trail down to Baker Beach or continue to the Presidio. Land's End and the Sutro Baths ruins are at their best in this window, with clearer ocean views than you will get in July.

In the city, the Mission's mural alleys, Dolores Park and the Ferry Building are pleasant in mild, dry weather. Twin Peaks and the Marin Headlands are the two viewpoints most likely to be clear in May — both are worth doing early in the trip while the pattern holds.

Day trips work well: Muir Woods (reserve parking or shuttle ahead), Sausalito by ferry, and the wine country north of the bay. Yosemite and Lake Tahoe are reachable but still cool at altitude in May, with some high roads closed — check conditions before committing.

Pack for three temperatures in one day: a mild afternoon downtown, a cold, windy bridge or beach, and a cool evening. Layers you can add and remove beat one heavy jacket. A light rain shell covers the few wet days and doubles as a windbreaker.

Comfortable walking shoes matter more here than in most US cities — the hills are steep and you will cover more ground on foot than you expect. Add sunglasses and sunscreen: May UV is strong on clear days even when the air feels cool. If you plan to swim or surf, rent a wetsuit rather than packing one; the ocean stays around 12–13 °C.

April is wetter and slightly cooler, with more rain days and lower prices. June brings the summer fog and the start of high-season pricing, though the days are longer. July is the busiest and most expensive month, with the fog at its most persistent on the western side of the city.

If your dates are flexible and you want the best balance of weather, crowds and price, May sits at the sweet spot between the wet spring and the foggy, crowded summer.
