San Francisco in April: what to expect

April sits at the end of the California coast wet season. Rain becomes less frequent through the month, but the city can still get a soaking front or two, and totals vary a lot from year to year. Daytime highs usually land in the high teens Celsius, with overnight lows in single digits to low teens — cool enough that a T-shirt alone is a mistake after sunset.

The bigger variable is microclimate. The fog belt on the west side (Ocean Beach, the Sunset, the Inner Richmond) can sit under grey cloud while the Mission, SoMa and the Embarcadero are sunny and several degrees warmer. Wind is the constant: the Golden Gate Bridge, Twin Peaks and the ferry deck are exposed and feel much colder than the sheltered streets a few blocks inland.

Daylight runs to roughly 13 hours by late April, which is enough for an evening walk along the waterfront or a late Golden Gate Park loop before dark.

April is a middle month. Spring break and Easter trips push hotel rates and museum queues up in the first week or two, then the city quiets down before the summer season starts in June. Weekends are still busy at Alcatraz, the cable cars and the Ferry Building; weekdays are noticeably calmer.

Expect hotel rates below July and August levels but above January and February. Booking two to four weeks ahead is usually enough outside Easter week, when you should book earlier. Flights into SFO and OAK follow the same pattern: cheaper midweek, pricier around the Easter holiday.

The main practical squeeze is Alcatraz. Ferries sell out days ahead in April, so reserve a slot as soon as your dates are fixed rather than leaving it to the morning of.

April is a light month for fixed-date city events, which is part of its appeal. The bigger draws are seasonal rather than scheduled: cherry blossoms in Golden Gate Park's Japanese Tea Garden area, wildflowers in the Marin Headlands, and the start of the outdoor farmers-market season.

Easter and spring break fall in late March or April depending on the year, and bring family traffic to Fisherman's Wharf, the Exploratorium and the California Academy of Sciences. Check the current calendar for the exact dates of any festival, parade or ballgame before you build a day around it — schedules shift year to year.

April rewards walking. The Embarcadero, Crissy Field and the Golden Gate Bridge welcome are at their best on a clear morning, before the afternoon wind picks up. Golden Gate Park, the Presidio and Lands End give you long, low-cost days outdoors, and the Japanese Tea Garden and Botanical Garden are at their spring peak.

For views, go early: Twin Peaks, Coit Tower and the Marin Headlands are clearest before midday, when fog and haze are least likely. Neighbourhood eating works in any weather — the Mission for burritos and taquerias, Chinatown for dim sum, North Beach for coffee and Italian, the Ferry Building for a market lunch.

Day trips are viable but cool. Muir Woods needs a parking or shuttle reservation, Point Reyes is windy and often fogged in, and the Santa Cruz boardwalk and beaches are still chilly. Napa and Sonoma are pleasant for tasting but the vines are only just leafing out, so it is not the scenic month.

Pack for two seasons in one day. A light base layer plus a mid-layer fleece or sweater plus a windproof, water-resistant outer shell covers almost every April day in the city. Add a compact umbrella or hood for the occasional front, and comfortable walking shoes — you will cover more ground than you expect on the hills.

Bring sunglasses and sunscreen for the sunny hours and a warm hat and gloves if you plan to walk the bridge, take a ferry or spend time at Ocean Beach. A small daypack beats a shoulder bag on the cable cars and in crowded markets.

March is wetter and cooler, with a higher chance of a washed-out day but lower prices. May is drier and slightly warmer, with the fog season starting to build and summer crowds still a month off — many travellers rate May the best month of the year here. June brings stronger fog and the start of peak-season pricing.

If your dates are flexible, late April and May give you the best balance of weather and value. If you are locked into early April, plan indoor backups — museums, the Ferry Building, neighbourhood food — for the days the fog wins.

Yes, for most first-time visitors. April gives you the city at close to its best: enough dry days for the bridge, the parks and the waterfront, medium crowds, and hotel rates below the summer peak. The compromises are cool evenings, wind on exposed spots and the chance of a rainy front.

Skip April only if you specifically want warm beach weather, wine-country scenery at full leaf, or guaranteed clear skies — those point to May, September or October. If you are here for the city itself, April is a solid, low-stress choice.
