San Francisco in July: what to expect

July is San Francisco's dry, mild summer. Rain is rare, days are long, and the city sits in its own cool coastal pocket while inland California bakes. Downtown and the Mission often reach 18–22 °C in the afternoon; the fog belt along Ocean Beach, the Sunset and the Golden Gate can stay 5–8 °C cooler with a stiff wind.

The pattern is reliable: fog rolls in through the Golden Gate in the late afternoon and evening, burns off by mid-morning, and leaves the eastern half of the city sunny. Inland — Berkeley, Oakland, San Jose, Napa — is 5–10 °C warmer and often clear all day. If you want heat, go east; if you want the classic city, stay in the middle.

The water is cold year-round, around 13–15 °C, and the ocean beaches have strong currents. Swimming is not the point here; walking, eating and day trips are.

July is peak season. Hotels run at their highest rates of the year, and the popular neighbourhoods — Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, the cable cars, Alcatraz — are busy every day. Weekends are noticeably worse than weekdays, and the 4 July holiday week is the busiest stretch of the summer.

Book accommodation 6–8 weeks ahead for anything near Union Square, the Embarcadero or the Marina. Hostels and budget hotels fill first. Alcatraz tickets sell out days in advance in summer; book as soon as your dates are fixed. Restaurant reservations for dinner are worth making the same week.

Prices are high but not extreme by US big-city standards. Expect to pay more for lodging than in spring or autumn, and roughly the same for food and transport.

July is a full month for events. The 4 July holiday brings fireworks over the bay and crowds along the waterfront. The San Francisco Marathon usually runs in late July, closing streets early in the morning. Outside Lands is in August, not July, so check the calendar before you plan around music.

Smaller neighbourhood festivals, street fairs and farmers' markets run most weekends. Exact dates change each year — confirm before you travel.

Stay in the eastern half of the city if you want sun: the Mission, SoMa, the Embarcadero and North Beach are usually clear while the west side is fogged in. The Golden Gate Bridge is worth doing early in the day, before the fog and the wind pick up, and the Marin Headlands side is often clearer than the city side.

Day trips work well in July. Marin County, Muir Woods (reserve parking or shuttle in advance), Napa Valley and the East Bay are warmer and drier than the city. Monterey and Big Sur are further but doable as an overnight. Lake Tahoe is hot and busy in July, and the Sierra trails are open.

Pack for two climates. A light T-shirt and trousers work downtown in the afternoon; add a windproof jacket, a warm layer and a hat for the bridge, the coast and any evening outdoors. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else — the hills are steep and you will walk a lot.

Sunscreen and sunglasses are worth carrying even on foggy days; the UV comes through. A refillable water bottle saves money and plastic. If you are heading to Marin, Napa or the Sierra, add shorts and a warmer-weather layer for the inland heat.

June is similar but foggier and slightly cooler, with fewer crowds. August is the warmest and clearest month of the summer in the city, and the busiest for tourism. September is the local favourite: warm, clear, and quieter after Labor Day. May is cooler and greener, with lower prices.

If your dates are flexible, September usually beats July on weather, crowds and price. If you are locked into July, the city still works well — just plan around the fog and book ahead.
