The Far East is a third of Russia's land area with about 6.3 million people, and most of it has no road or rail link to the next region. Vladivostok is seven time zones and roughly 9,300 km of rail from Moscow. Treat it as several separate trips: a rail-and-city trip in the south, a flight-only trip to Kamchatka, and expedition cruises for the Kurils, Chukotka and Wrangel Island.

Distances are huge and much of the region is roadless — a 'nearby' town can be a flight or a two-day train.
Northeastern Russia is almost entirely off the rail network; the Yakutsk–Magadan road is seasonal and partly maintained.
Kamchatka's roads do not connect to the mainland; north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky you reach Esso, and beyond that it is wilderness travel.
Cold is the main hazard, especially in Yakutia; bears, including polar bears on the Arctic coast, are a real risk.
Some areas and reserves need permits; arrange them well before you book flights.

Pacific south (Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Sakhalin): Monsoon pattern: summer is wet and humid, autumn is the clearest stretch. Winter is dry and cold with sea fog and ice on the coast.
Kamchatka: Short summer window for helicopter and volcano trips; weather cancels flights and tours with little notice.
Yakutia and the northeast: Extreme continental cold; Yakutia holds the northern hemisphere record low. Summer is short, warm by day and cold at night.

Best months are June to September in most of the region, but they are also the only months many tours and cruises run — book beds and flights months ahead.
