Vladivostok is the eastern end of the Trans-Siberian Railway and Russia's main Pacific port, built on steep hills around Golden Horn Bay. Most sights sit within walking distance of the train station; the bridges, forts and Russkiy Island fill a second day. It is a long way from anywhere, so plan it as a destination, not a stopover.

Getting around

Walk the centre: Aleutskaya St runs north–south past the train station, Svetlanskaya St is the main east–west street. Buses and marshrutka shared taxis cover the hills and suburbs; pay the driver as you exit at the front. App taxis are cheap by Western standards. The hills are steep and winter ice makes pavements hazardous.

The centre is busy and generally calm by day; the real risks are winter ice, steep streets, aggressive driving and photographing naval or military sites. Check your government's advice for Russia before you book.
