Kaliningrad Oblast is Russia's exclave on the Baltic, wedged between Poland and Lithuania and cut off from the rest of the country by land. It is the old German province of East Prussia: Königsberg, brick Gothic castle ruins, and a coast of sandy beaches at Svetlogorsk and Zelenogradsk. It also produces most of the world's amber. The catch is access. Since 2022, EU airspace is closed to Russian flights, so the easy European connections are gone; what remains is a domestic flight from Moscow or St Petersburg, a long rail route through Lithuania, or a ferry from St Petersburg. Land crossings from Poland and Lithuania are slow and subject to sanctions rules. Treat the trip as a Russia trip, not a Baltic add-on: sort your visa and your entry point before booking anything.
