Where to stay in Republic of the Congo: best areas and types of hotel

For a first trip, stay in Brazzaville for 2 nights and Pointe-Noire for 2–3 nights, then add a lodge package if you are going for gorillas. Brazzaville suits city sights and onward flights; Pointe-Noire suits the coast, seafood and day-trips north. Odzala-Kokoua is not a place you book a room in — you buy a package that includes the charter flight, meals and guiding.

Brazzaville splits into a few practical pockets. The city centre and the area around the main administrative streets hold the larger international-style hotels, which come with reliable power, air conditioning, restaurants and airport transfers. Bacongo, south of the centre, is quieter and more residential, with smaller guesthouses and mission-style stays; it puts you near the basilica and the painting school. Poto-Poto is central and busy, useful if you want markets and street life on the doorstep.

Pointe-Noire is a port city, so the choice is mostly between the commercial Centre-Ville and the coast road heading north towards the beaches. Centre-Ville hotels are convenient for the airport and business, while the coastal side is better for a slower couple of days and easier access to Diosso and the road to Conkouati-Douli. Rooms here fill during oil-industry events, so check dates before you fix a plan.

Outside the two cities, accommodation is limited to lodges, camps and a handful of small hotels in towns such as Dolisie. Most of these are sold as part of a tour, with transport, meals and guides bundled in. If you want to travel independently, plan your nights around the two cities and take day-trips rather than expecting to find rooms along the road.

City hotel rates in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire are driven by business travel, so they sit higher than you might expect for the region. A clean mid-range double with air conditioning is roughly XAF 40,000–90,000 per night in 2026, and international hotels run well above that. Guesthouses in Bacongo or smaller towns are cheaper but usually take cash only.

Wildlife lodges are a different budget entirely. A 4–5 night Odzala-Kokoua package with the charter flight, meals and guiding typically runs into several thousand US dollars per person. That is the only realistic way to stay in the park, so treat it as a fixed cost and book 3–6 months ahead, longer for peak dates in December–March and June–September.

For city hotels, book 2–4 weeks ahead in the June–September dry season and around public holidays. If your dates overlap a conference or an oil-sector event in Pointe-Noire, book earlier or you will be pushed to a more expensive room. Confirm the airport transfer and whether breakfast is included before you pay.

Ask about power before booking. Mains supply is 230 V with type C and E plugs, and outages are common enough that a backup generator matters for air conditioning and charging. Wi-Fi in city hotels is usually workable but slow; a local SIM or eSIM is a better bet for data on the move.

Payments lean on cash. The currency is the Central African CFA franc (XAF), fixed at 655.957 per euro, and smaller guesthouses and lodges may not take cards at all. Carry enough cash for your first nights and any tips, and check whether your hotel adds a service charge. Tipping is around 5–10% in restaurants, with a tip box at lodges.

Health and entry paperwork belong in the same planning step as your booking. Yellow fever vaccination is generally required for entry, and malaria precautions apply across the country, including in the cities. Sort your visa at an embassy before you fly, and expect Ebola screening on arrival while the DRC outbreak lasts.
