Best time to visit Republic of the Congo: weather and seasons by month

Go June to September: dry, cooler and the only window that works for Brazzaville, Pointe-Noire and Odzala-Kokoua at once. July is the best all-round month, with whales off the coast. A second northern-forest window runs December to March. April and November are the months to skip.

Month by month

The country sits on both sides of the equator, so there is no single season. The south (Brazzaville, Dolisie, the Pool) has a dry, overcast, cooler spell from June to September and storms in November and December. The Atlantic coast runs on the same calendar but adds a cool grey dry season and whales offshore in July–September. The northern forest around Odzala-Kokoua and Ouesso is wet in every month, with lodges favouring December–March and June–September.

Use the table as a planning grid, not a forecast: a wet month in Brazzaville can still be a workable month in Odzala, and the reverse.

Which region in which month

If your trip is Brazzaville and the south, aim for June–September. That is when the city is cooler and drier, the roads to Dolisie and the Pool are in better shape, and the river rapids and basilica days are comfortable. November and December bring storms and flash floods to the same area.

For the coast, June–September is again the window: a cool grey dry season, calmer sea and humpback whales offshore from July to September. Pointe-Noire and the day-trips north to Diosso and Loango work year-round, but the dry months are easier.

For Odzala-Kokoua and the northern forest, you have two windows: December–March and June–September. Gorilla tracking is a package product with charter flights, so availability, not weather, is often the binding constraint. Book well ahead for either window.

Cost and crowds by season

Prices track the weather more than the crowds. The low season — April, May, October and November — is when you will find the cheapest lodge rates and the most flight availability, because it is also the wettest or stormiest stretch. High season runs January–February and June–August, when Odzala packages and coastal hotels are fullest and charter seats are tightest.

Crowds are low almost everywhere by international standards. The exceptions are Brazzaville around 15 August, when Independence Day parades close offices, and the Christmas period, when diaspora visits fill flights into both Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. Book those dates early.

For a full breakdown of what things cost, see the travel costs page.

  • Cheapest: April, May, October, November (low season, low prices)
  • Best value in good weather: late May and September (shoulder)
  • Most expensive: January–February and June–August
  • Book earliest: Odzala lodge packages and Christmas flights

Practical notes

Rain in this region rarely means all-day drizzle; it usually arrives as heavy afternoon or evening downpours, so mornings are often usable even in a wet month. Build slack into any road transfer in April, May, October and November, when unpaved routes turn muddy.

Visa arrangements take time and are best started at an embassy well before you book a lodge window. Health screening on arrival has been in place while the Ebola outbreak in the neighbouring DRC lasts; check the current status before you fly. For safety, transport and entry questions, use the country pages linked below.

  • Start the visa process early; lodge windows and charter seats are limited
  • Check current health screening rules before departure
  • Allow extra time for road transfers in the wet months

Questions people ask

What is the best time of year to visit Republic of the Congo?

June to September. It is the only window that works for Brazzaville, Pointe-Noire and Odzala-Kokoua at the same time: dry, cooler, and with whales off the coast in July–September. July is the best single month.

When is the cheapest time to visit Republic of the Congo?

April, May, October and November, the low season, when lodge rates and flights are cheapest. Those months are also the wettest or stormiest, so expect rain and mud on road transfers.

What is the weather like in Republic of the Congo each month?

The south is dry, overcast and cooler June–September, with storms November–December. The coast matches that pattern and adds whales July–September. The northern forest is wet in every month, with better spells December–March and June–September.

Is there a second good season for gorilla tracking?

Yes. Odzala-Kokoua lodges also favour December–March, a short dry spell in the north. Availability and charter flights, not weather, are usually the limit, so book either window well ahead.

Which months should I avoid?

April is the wettest spell and some camps close. November brings heavy storms in Brazzaville and muddy trails. Both are cheap, but plan around them if your trip depends on road transfers or forest walking.

Do holidays affect travel dates?

Independence Day on 15 August brings parades and office closures in Brazzaville. Christmas fills flights with diaspora visits. Other public holidays have low impact on travellers.
