Porthgain

Give Porthgain half a day plus one coastal walk: harbour, lunch at The Shed, then the coast path to Abereiddy. Sleep elsewhere.

Porthgain is a single-row harbour village on the north Pembrokeshire coast, once an industrial port shipping slate and crushed road stone. There is no hotel strip and almost nothing to do beyond the harbour, two places to eat and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Treat it as a half-day stop or a lunch-and-walk base, and sleep in St Davids, Fishguard or a nearby cottage.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The village is a five-minute walk end to end. Everything else needs a car, a bike or the coast path. The 404 Strumble Shuttle links St Davids and Fishguard along the coast, daily in summer and only Thursday and Saturday from October to May: check the current timetable before you rely on it. Parking at the harbour is small and fills by mid-morning in summer.

Day-trips

Door to door: About 40–50 min on foot, 10 min by car

Pembrokeshire Coast Path south from the harbour

The best short walk from Porthgain; the lagoon is a former slate quarry.

Door to door: About 20 min by car

Car on the A487, or the 404 shuttle in summer

Cathedral and the smallest city in Britain; combine with a coast-path stretch.

Fishguard

caution

Car on the A487, or the 404 shuttle

Useful for ferries and supplies rather than sightseeing.

Door to door: About 30–35 min by car

Car via the A487 and A487 north

Better lunch and beach stop than Fishguard; Carningli walk above the town.

Newgale

Door to door: About 30 min by car

Car via the A487 south

Two-mile pebble-and-sand beach; surf hire and a pub on the front.

Door to door: About 50–60 min by car

Car via the A40 and A478

Walled town and beaches; a full day, not a quick add-on.

Door to door: About 45 min by car

Car via the A40

Port and marina; no reason to detour from the north coast.

Freshwater East

caution

Door to door: About 55 min by car

Car via the A40 and B4584

Sandy bay and dunes; only worth it if you are already in the south.

Castle is the reason; pair it with a Tenby stop.

Porthgain itself

A handful of self-catering cottages and lodges; no hotel. Book months ahead for summer.

St Davids

About 15–20 min by road; the widest choice of beds, pubs and shops.

Fishguard

About 25–30 min by road; ferry port, cheaper beds, more services.

Llanrhian and the lanes inland

Cottages and lodges 5–10 min from the harbour; you need a car.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are cliff edges on the coast path, slippery rock after rain, and driving single-track lanes with passing places. In summer the harbour car park fills and the shuttle is the only public transport.
  • Parking at the harbour is limited; arrive before 10:00 in summer or park at Abereiddy and walk in.
  • The 404 shuttle is seasonal and thin outside summer: check times, and have a taxi number.
  • Public toilets near the car park open from Easter to October half term only.
  • The coast path edges are unfenced and the rock is slippery after rain; keep back from the cliff.
  • Mobile signal is patchy in the coves below the village.
