Porthgain
Give Porthgain half a day plus one coastal walk: harbour, lunch at The Shed, then the coast path to Abereiddy. Sleep elsewhere.
Porthgain is a single-row harbour village on the north Pembrokeshire coast, once an industrial port shipping slate and crushed road stone. There is no hotel strip and almost nothing to do beyond the harbour, two places to eat and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Treat it as a half-day stop or a lunch-and-walk base, and sleep in St Davids, Fishguard or a nearby cottage.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Parking at the harbour is limited; arrive before 10:00 in summer or park at Abereiddy and walk in.
- The 404 shuttle is seasonal and thin outside summer: check times, and have a taxi number.
- Public toilets near the car park open from Easter to October half term only.
- The coast path edges are unfenced and the rock is slippery after rain; keep back from the cliff.
- Mobile signal is patchy in the coves below the village.
Very safe. The real risks are cliff edges on the coast path, slippery rock after rain, and driving single-track lanes with passing places. In summer the harbour car park fills and the shuttle is the only public transport.
