KalugaКалуга

Give Kaluga one full day for the Tsiolkovsky space museum and the 1777 stone bridge; two nights if you add Tikhonova Hermitage or Obninsk.

Kaluga is a 160 km run south-west of Moscow, best known as the cradle of Russian space exploration: the world's first space museum sits here, next to a real 38 m Vostok rocket. The centre is compact and walkable — a 1777 stone viaduct, Gostiny Dvor and a run of small museums — so most travellers see it in a day or use it as a base for the Ugra national park and the Tolstoy-linked Tikhonova Hermitage.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Russia ↗Check your own government travel advice for Russia before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Russia ↗Direct flights from much of Europe and North America are suspended; no independent tourist route is documented here.
  • Russia ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Russia before you rely on it.

Getting around

Trolleybus, bus and fixed-route minibus (marshrutka) cover the centre on a flat fare, listed at 35 RUB (2026 estimate). Trams run to Tsiolkovsky Park. Taxis are cheap and easy to order by app; agree the price or use the meter. The centre itself — Stone Bridge, Gostiny Dvor, Lenin Street — is walkable.

Watch out

Safety

Kaluga is a normal Russian provincial city: petty theft and late-night trouble on the outskirts are the realistic risks, and document checks are routine. Read your own government's travel advice for Russia before booking anything.
  • Carry your passport: police can and do check documents.
  • Avoid the industrial outskirts on foot late at night.
  • Kaluga-2 station is about 11 km (6.8 mi) from the centre — check which station your train uses before booking a hotel.
  • Museum closing days vary (many shut Mondays and the last Friday of the month): check each site before you go.
  • Card payments from foreign-issued cards are unreliable in Russia; carry rubles in cash.
