Kaluga is a 160 km run south-west of Moscow, best known as the cradle of Russian space exploration: the world's first space museum sits here, next to a real 38 m Vostok rocket. The centre is compact and walkable — a 1777 stone viaduct, Gostiny Dvor and a run of small museums — so most travellers see it in a day or use it as a base for the Ugra national park and the Tolstoy-linked Tikhonova Hermitage.
