Dmitrov is a small city about 65 km north of Moscow, founded in 1154, with an earth-rampart kremlin, a 16th-century cathedral and a working monastery. The centre is compact and walkable; most travellers see it as a day trip from Moscow by suburban train, and one night is enough if you want the monastery at a quiet hour.

The centre is small and walkable — kremlin, cathedral, monastery and museums sit within about 1.5 km of each other. City buses cover the outer districts; taxis are cheap for short hops. The railway station is a 10–15 min walk from the kremlin.

Dmitrov is a quiet provincial city and street crime is low; the real risks are winter ice, unlit paths along the canal and long gaps between suburban trains late at night.

  • Museum hours are limited and can close without notice — the regional museum is closed Sun–Tue (check).
  • Winter ice on the kremlin ramparts and stairs; wear grip soles.
