Toyooka豊岡

Use Toyooka as a base for Kinosaki Onsen and the Sanin coast: two nights let you soak in the hot springs, visit Izushi Castle ruins and hike Kannabe Valley.

Toyooka is the transport and accommodation hub for northern Hyogo, with direct trains from Kyoto and Osaka. The city itself is quiet, but it puts you 15 minutes from Kinosaki Onsen, 20 minutes from Izushi's samurai town and within an hour of the Sea of Japan beaches. Most travellers use it as a two-night base.

  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • Japan ↗IC cards (ICOCA/Suica) are topped up with cash at station machines.
  • Japan ↗Smoking while walking is banned in most city centres; use designated areas.
  • Japan ↗Shinkansen bags 160–250 cm (L+W+H) need a seat reserved with the oversized-baggage area.

Watch out

Safety

Toyooka is a safe small city. The main risks are winter road ice and summer heat at the beach. In Kinosaki, watch your step on wet wooden walkways.
  • Kinosaki Onsen ryokan often require dinner reservations; book ahead.
  • Tajima Airport flights are limited; check the schedule before planning a flight connection.
  • Winter snow can delay trains on the Sanin Main Line; check JR West alerts.
