Toyooka
豊岡
Use Toyooka as a base for Kinosaki Onsen and the Sanin coast: two nights let you soak in the hot springs, visit Izushi Castle ruins and hike Kannabe Valley.
Toyooka is the transport and accommodation hub for northern Hyogo, with direct trains from Kyoto and Osaka. The city itself is quiet, but it puts you 15 minutes from Kinosaki Onsen, 20 minutes from Izushi's samurai town and within an hour of the Sea of Japan beaches. Most travellers use it as a two-night base.
