Ocho Rios is Jamaica's north-coast activity hub: Dunn's River Falls, the White River, Mystic Mountain and a cruise port that empties and refills the town several times a week. It suits travellers who want a resort base with day trips attached, not travellers hunting empty sand. Getting around

Route taxis (shared minivans) run along the A3 between Ocho Rios, St Ann's Bay and Oracabessa for a few hundred JMD; agree the fare before you board. Chartered taxis cost far more but are safer at night — have your hotel call one. Walking works downtown and along the main road, but shoulders are narrow and there are no proper pavements in places.

Watch out

Safety

Ocho Rios is a busy resort town and the main tourist areas are fine by day. The real risks are petty theft at the beach and markets, unlicensed taxis at the pier, and swimming where there is no lifeguard. Keep valuables in a hotel safe, not a beach locker.
  • Cruise-ship days (often 2–4 a week) fill Dunn's River Falls and the craft markets; go at opening or pick a non-ship day.
  • Vendors at the falls and main pier are persistent; a firm 'no thank you' and walking on is normal.
  • Rip currents and drop-offs at some beaches; swim where lifeguards are posted.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov, peaking Sep–Nov; check that your hotel is open and your insurance covers storms.
  • Only use marked taxis or hotel-arranged cars; unmarked cars at the pier are not licensed.
