- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
- Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
- Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
- Albania ↗Albania is outside the EU and the Schengen area and sets its own entry rules; check the official requirements for your passport before you book.
- Albania ↗If you drive, carry your licence, rental papers and insurance proof, and expect unlit mountain roads and livestock after dark.
- Albania ↗Land borders with Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Greece are used by buses; allow for queues in summer and check that your rental contract allows crossing.
- Northeastern Albania ↗Carry cash (lek). Card readers are rare outside Kukës town and the bigger hotels; ATMs are scarce in Peshkopi and Bajram Curri.
- Northeastern Albania ↗Bring your passport for the day: the Kosovo and North Macedonia crossings are within an hour of parts of this region.
- Northeastern Albania ↗The SH5/R7 motorway from Prizren is fast; everything off it is single-lane mountain road with livestock. Drive only in daylight.

Valbona Valley National Park covers the upper Valbona River valley in the Albanian Alps, a landscape of spruce and beech forest, glacial valleys and traditional stone villages. It borders Theth National Park to the south-west; the two parks are linked by the popular Valbona–Theth pass hike. The park has no fixed entry fee, no visitor centre with regular hours and limited trail marking — it is a wild, lightly managed area where self-reliance matters more than at most European national parks.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- Main village roads are reachable by car; trailheads have short walks.
- Steep sections on Çerem Path are not suitable for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Use designated campsites and avoid wild camping.
- Buy food and services from local guesthouses to support the community.
- Do not disturb wildlife; keep dogs leashed.
- Never pay for 'bear tours' or 'lynx sightings' — they do not exist reliably and may involve baiting.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Valbona Valley National Park?
There is no fixed entry fee. Most visitors make a voluntary contribution of €1–€2 at the Valbona Tourism Center. Camping costs about €2 per person at the two designated campsites.
What are the best hikes in Valbona Valley National Park?
The Valbona–Theth pass hike (6–8 h, hard) is the classic route. For easier options: Begaj Water Canal (9 km, 2–3 h, easy) and Çerem Path (12 km, 4 h, moderate). All are marked on local maps; buy one at the tourism centre.
When is the best time to visit Valbona Valley National Park?
June to August offers warm, dry conditions and full trail access. May and September are also good with fewer crowds. Winter (November–March) brings deep snow and avalanche risk; only experienced winter trekkers should visit.
Is camping allowed anywhere in the park?
Camping is only permitted at Valbona Eco Camping and Përparimi campsite; wild camping is prohibited. Both charge about €2 per person.
Are there safety concerns about unexploded ordnance?
Yes. The Tropoja area saw conflict in the 1990s and unexploded ordnance remains. Stick to marked trails, avoid abandoned military sites and do not touch any metal objects. The risk is moderate but manageable with caution.
Can I do the Valbona–Theth pass hike without a guide?
Experienced hikers can do it independently with a GPS or offline map, but the route is unmarked in sections and phone signal is patchy. Many people hire a guide or join a group from a guesthouse. Register your plan at the tourism centre.
What wildlife can I expect to see?
Golden eagles, chamois and butterflies are common. Brown bears, wolves and lynx live in the park but are rarely seen. Fire salamanders appear on the river walk after rain. Do not approach or feed any large mammal.
