Temiskaming Shores is the biggest community in this part of Northeastern Ontario, formed from Haileybury, New Liskeard and Dymond. It is a lake-and-highway stop, not a sightseeing city: the draws are Devil's Rock, the waterfronts and the Cobalt silver-rush history nearby. One to two nights covers it; a car is best for the sights outside town, though Temiskaming Transit links the two main towns.

Getting around

A car is the practical answer: Haileybury and New Liskeard are about 8 km apart and taxis add up fast. Temiskaming Transit links the two roughly 6:00–23:00, hourly on weekdays and every 2 hours at weekends, with no service on holidays; fare about $3.75 adult, $3.50 student or senior 55+, free for children (check current fares). Highway 11 is the main north–south route, Highway 65 runs west toward the Quebec border.

Watch out

Safety

A small, low-crime northern city; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 11, patchy Rogers coverage, and long unlit stretches between the three towns after dark.
  • Rogers cell coverage is patchy, especially in Haileybury; Bell/NorthernTel and Telus are more reliable.
  • No airport shuttle from North Bay, Rouyn-Noranda or Sudbury: arrange a car or the Ontario Northland bus.
  • The Peter Grant Mansion is private property and unfinished — do not treat it as a sight.
  • Seasonal businesses and attractions around Cobalt and on the lake close outside summer; call ahead.
  • Winter driving on Highway 11 can be icy and snow-covered; check conditions before a night arrival.
