Temagami is a village of about 800 people on Highway 11 in Northern Ontario, between North Bay and Cobalt, and the staging point for Lake Temagami canoe trips and Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provincial Park. The draw is water, old-growth red and white pine, and 4,000 km of canoe routes, not a town centre. Two nights is the useful minimum; one night only works if you arrive early and leave late.

Getting around

The village is small enough to walk. Everything else — Finlayson Point, the Fire Tower trailhead, outfitters, Marten River — needs a car; there is no local transit. Ontario Northland intercity buses stop at the gas station on the North Bay–Timmins run, but they will not get you to a trailhead.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime; the real risks are the drive (moose, ice, trucks), the water (cold, wind, no cell signal) and insects in early summer. Nearest hospital is in North Bay, about an hour away.
  • Moose and deer on Highway 11 at dawn, dusk and night, year-round: if you hit a moose you will likely need a new car.
  • Winter driving here is the local benchmark for bad: snow, ice and trucks.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the lake and in the backcountry; tell someone your route before you paddle.
  • Blackflies and mosquitoes are serious in June and July: bring repellent and long sleeves.
  • Many lodges, outfitters and the provincial park shut or run reduced hours outside summer; book ahead and confirm.
  • No hospital in the village: nearest emergency care is in North Bay, about an hour away.
