Delungra is a hamlet of about 650 people on the Gwydir Highway between Inverell (33 km east) and Warialda (29 km west). It has a pub, a bowlo, a fuel stop, a showground with powered sites and no shops beyond that. The reason to get out of the car is the Myall Creek Massacre Memorial, 19 km south-west, where in 1838 the first white settlers in New South Wales were punished for murdering Aboriginal people. Treat Delungra as a two-hour stop or a single night, not a destination.

Getting around

Private transport is essential: no taxi and no local bus. The village itself is walkable in five minutes — pub, bowlo, fuel, post office and rest area all sit on or just off the Gwydir Highway. The nearest car rental is in Inverell. Fuel at Northwest Petroleum (Shell), 26 Inverell Street: Mon–Fri 5:30am–6pm, Sat–Sun 7am–5pm.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are heat, long empty roads and no banking or fuel after dark. Tell someone your route if you drive the Bingara Road at night.
  • No banks in Delungra and no Bank@Post at the post office: bring cash or do your banking in Inverell or Warialda. The only ATM is at the Delungra Hotel Cafe during pub hours.
  • NSW TrainLink coaches stop at the corner of Gwydir Highway and Gunnee Street, but drivers take no payment and cannot book you: reserve ahead by phone or online, and note there is no Sunday service on the Grafton–Moree route.
  • The Gwydir Highway carries road trains and long-haul trucks; pull fully off the bitumen at rest areas before stopping.
  • Summer days inland regularly pass 35 °C and the nearest hospital is in Inverell: carry water on any walk at Myall Creek or Copeton Dam.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy on the Bingara Road and around the memorial site; download maps and the Myall Creek Soundtrail before leaving town.
