Bingara is a 1,400-person town on the Gwydir River in New South Wales' New England region, on the Fossickers Way/B95 between Tamworth and Warialda. It is a one-street town with a restored 1936 Greek-built cinema, a gem museum and gold-fossicking country around it. Almost everyone arrives by car; there is no taxi, no local bus and no scheduled air service.

Safety

Low crime, low traffic, long distances. The real risks are wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, summer heat, and no phone signal in fossicking and national park areas.
  • No taxi, no local bus and no scheduled flights: arrive with your own car.
  • NSW TrainLink coaches are booking-only and drivers take no payment; book ahead.
  • Killarney Gap Road towards Narrabri has sharp twists and hairpin bends; long vehicles need care.
  • Apex Lookout Road is steep and unsuitable for caravans and long vehicles.
  • Mobile coverage is limited to none at Terry Hie Hie and some fossicking areas.
  • Summer inland heat: plan walks and fossicking for early morning.
