Warialda is a small farming town on the Gwydir Highway in north-west New South Wales, between Inverell and Moree, with about 1,100 people. Two or three hours covers the town itself; the reason to sleep here is the surrounding bush, the granite boulders at Cranky Rock and the gorges of Kwiambal National Park. There is no taxi and no local bus, so a car is not optional.

Getting around

Private car only. There is no taxi and no local bus in Warialda, and the nearest car rental agencies are in Inverell and Moree. The town centre is walkable in 10 minutes end to end; everything worth seeing outside it needs a vehicle.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime country town. The real risks are the long empty drives, kangaroos and stock on the road at dawn and dusk, summer heat above 35 °C, and unsealed park roads after rain — carry water and tell someone your route.
  • No taxi and no local bus: without a car you are limited to the town centre.
  • NSW TrainLink coaches stop at the visitor centre but bookings are not made there — book at the Warialda Newsagency, 58–60 Hope Street, or by phone.
  • Coach drivers do not take payment or make reservations.
  • The Grafton–Moree coach runs on alternating days in alternating directions and has no Sunday service.
  • Kwiambal National Park access is on unsealed roads; check conditions after rain.
  • The Bikini Tree sits on a busy highway — pull fully off the road and watch traffic.
  • Fuel and supplies: fill up in Inverell or Moree if you are heading into the parks.
