Konark is a small coastal town built around one monument: the 13th-century Sun Temple, a UNESCO site shaped as Surya's chariot with 24 carved wheels and seven horses. The temple is 2 km from the sea and 33 km from Puri. Most visitors rush it in a day; one night buys you the quiet 6:00 opening and the evening light-and-sound show.

Getting around

The town is small: the temple, market and most lodges are walkable. Cycle rickshaws and auto-rickshaws cover the beach and Ramachandi. Buses and shared autos run to Puri (about 1 h) and Bhubaneswar; a hired car is the comfortable option between the three points of the Puri–Konark–Bhubaneswar triangle.

Watch out

Safety

Konark is a small, low-crime temple town and safe for tourists by day. The real risks are heat, unguarded beach currents, and pushy guides or 'blessing' touts around the temple gate.
  • The jagamohana interior has been sealed since 1951; you see the monument from outside, not inside.
  • Falling masonry is a known concern — stay behind barriers and off roped-off stonework.
  • Temple guides and 'priests' who demand a fee for blessings: agree a price or walk on.
  • Chandrabhaga currents are strong; swim only where locals do, and not at dusk.
  • Summer heat and monsoon rain make Apr–Sep uncomfortable for walking the exposed compound.
