  • South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
  • South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
  • India ↗Apply for the e-visa only on the official government portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in); lookalike sites charge extra. Check the current rules, fees and how far ahead to apply.
  • India ↗Do not follow anyone who says your hotel is closed, the station ticket office is closed or a road is shut; use the prepaid taxi counter, the metro or an app car.
  • India ↗Carry Indian rupees in small notes (10, 20, 50, 100); change for 500 is often refused.
  • India ↗Parts of the Northeast, Sikkim, Ladakh, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and all border belts need a Protected or Restricted Area Permit or an Inner Line Permit for foreigners; check before you book the route.

Gwalior is a fort city on the Delhi–Bhopal rail line, about 3 hours from Delhi by Vande Bharat and 1.5 hours from Agra by road. The hill fort, its rock-cut Jain figures and the Scindia palace fill one solid day; the city itself is a working town of about 1.1 million with no beach-and-café scene. Most travellers pass through on the way to or from Agra, Orchha or Khajuraho, and one night is enough.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Auto-rickshaws have no meters: agree the fare before you get in, or use the prepaid booth at Gwalior Junction. Shared tempos are the cheapest way around the city. For the fort, take an auto to the fort road and walk up, or hire a car for the day if you also want Tighra Dam or the Sun Temple.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Datia

go

Door to door: 2–2.5 h each way

Train or road south toward Jhansi, about 75 km

The Bir Singh Deo palace is the reason to come; pair it with a Jhansi stop.

Shivpuri

overnight

Door to door: 2.5–3 h each way

Road or train south-west, about 120 km

Madhav National Park and the old Scindia chhatris; too far for a comfortable return day.

Orchha

overnight

Door to door: 3–3.5 h

Train to Jhansi, then a 30-min auto or taxi

River-side cenotaphs and palaces; sleep one night rather than rush back.

Door to door: 1.5–2.5 h

Train or the NH44 highway, about 120 km

Most travellers link the two; book the train seat in advance.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

City Centre / Jayendraganj

Between the railway station and Jai Vilas Mahal; walkable to the palace and the Lashkar bazaars.

Lashkar

The old commercial quarter south of the fort; cheap hotels and the best street food, but traffic-heavy.

Near Gwalior Junction

Practical for a one-night rail stop; prepaid auto booth at the station.

Watch out

Safety

Gwalior is a normal Indian city for tourists: petty theft and overcharging are the real risks, not violence. Women should expect stares; travel in pairs after dark and use app or hotel-arranged taxis at night.
  • Auto-rickshaws do not use meters: fix the price first.
  • Summer heat is extreme — carry water and start sightseeing at opening.
  • Do not swim at Nalkeshwar waterfall: drownings have been reported.
  • Fort hill paths are uneven and have long stair flights; wear grippy shoes.
