Gwalior is a fort city on the Delhi–Bhopal rail line, about 3 hours from Delhi by Vande Bharat and 1.5 hours from Agra by road. The hill fort, its rock-cut Jain figures and the Scindia palace fill one solid day; the city itself is a working town of about 1.1 million with no beach-and-café scene. Most travellers pass through on the way to or from Agra, Orchha or Khajuraho, and one night is enough.

Get around
Auto-rickshaws have no meters: agree the fare before you get in, or use the prepaid booth at Gwalior Junction. Shared tempos are the cheapest way around the city. For the fort, take an auto to the fort road and walk up, or hire a car for the day if you also want Tighra Dam or the Sun Temple.

Gwalior is a normal Indian city for tourists: petty theft and overcharging are the real risks, not violence. Women should expect stares; travel in pairs after dark and use app or hotel-arranged taxis at night.
